Mary Ellen Sweitzer, 90, entered into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at her daughter's home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on July 19, 1935, in La Place, Illinois. In those early days, her first bed was a dresser drawer, a simple beginning to a life that would be rich in family and love. She was the youngest of five children born to Ralph and Arline Eckles, tenderly known as Pappy and Granny. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Thompson, Missouri. She graduated from Mexico High School in 1954, and just two months later, on July 7, 1954, she married Joe Hartley Sweitzer.

Joe and Mary Ellen celebrated 55 years of marriage before his passing on April 13, 2010. Her siblings also preceded her in death.

Mary Ellen was a faithful member of Mexico United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years. She served in many quiet and loving ways, including helping prepare meals for families during times of loss and need.

Mary Ellen was a true farm wife, working faithfully alongside Joe in every aspect of their life together. She also kept a big garden with a row of beautiful flowers. She loved to line dance and did so multiple times a week for more than 25 years. She had a gift for taking ordinary moments and filling them with so much love that life felt extra special to those around her.

She was well known for her wonderful cooking and the special things she made for those she loved. Her amazing fried chicken, made in a homemade cast iron skillet that was a gift from her brother, was unforgettable. Her beer bread, homemade desserts, and pies were always a huge hit. She was also known for her homemade strawberry jam and peanut brittle, which became favorites among family and friends.

Together, Joe and Mary Ellen built a family that became one of the greatest joys of her life. She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Steve (Polly) Sweitzer of Laguna Beach, California, Jo Ellen Sweitzer of Mexico, Missouri, and Michael (Sharla) Sweitzer of Mexico, Missouri; four grandchildren, Travis (Theresa) Sweitzer of Washington, Missouri, Jessica (Zachary) Webb of Martinsburg, Missouri, Kaitlin Sweitzer of Mexico, Missouri, and Sadie Sweitzer of Adelaide, Australia; and three great grandchildren, Jacob, Sophia, and Emmett.

Mary Ellen will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, a faithful servant of the Lord, and a true Proverbs 31 woman. Her life reflected strength, kindness, generosity, quiet faithfulness, a beautiful smile, and a zesty spirit for life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and beautiful memories that will be treasured always.

Visitation will be held at Arnold Funeral Home on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 12:00 noon, with funeral services to follow at 2:00 pm. A graveside service will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park.
