Mary Jane “Jane” Rankin

Jane Rankin, of Mexico, Missouri, was born May 2, 1933, in Billings, Montana. She passed away on August 8, 2026. Jane was the only child of Marie and William Mapes. From an early age, Jane exuded the strength and independence that would guide her throughout life.

Jane spent her early childhood in Billings and later moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she completed high school. She developed a passion for learning and a deep appreciation for education. She aspired to become a teacher and pursued it with dedication and purpose.

Jane graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree in education and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Missouri in Communications Arts. She had a particular interest in speech, drama and debate, which would later shape her career.

Jane devoted her professional life to teaching at Mexico Senior High School in Mexico, Missouri. She made a lasting impact on her students and was known for her patience, high expectations, and ability to bring out the best in those she taught. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, as many of her students carried the lessons she taught them into their adult lives. Jane’s dear signature phrase, “You are loved and wanted,” meant so much to her students, friends and family.

Jane was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard “Duane” Rankin. Together, Jane and Duane lived a life centered on family, hard work, and devotion to one another. Their home was always welcoming during birthdays, holidays, Sunday meals, and everyday moments that were made special by laughter, Jane’s affection and attention. Her kitchen was filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals. She took pride in ensuring no one left her table hungry.

Jane is survived by her four children and their spouses: Michael (Mike) Rankin and his wife Susan; Therese Rankin; William (Bill) Rankin and his wife Anne; and Matthew (Matt) Rankin and his wife Laura Bourgeois. Jane was a devoted mother who offered steady guidance, unconditional love, and a lasting example of resilience and grace.

Jane is also survived by her grandchildren: Jessica Welles, Lauren Maldonado, Krista Rankin, and Patrick Bourgeois Rankin. Jane took great joy in her grandchildren, celebrating their milestones and supporting them. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Anna Welles, Erica Welles, Micah Bennett, Koah Bennett, and Sterling Maldonado, as well as her great-great-grandson, Angel Welles.

Jane will be remembered for her steady presence, and the way she made others feel valued and cared for. Her love, strength, kindness and devotion to her family and students remain her lasting legacy. Jane will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her influence and example will live on through the many lives she touched.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 17, at St. Brendan Catholic Church with Fr. Dave Veit officiating. Burial will follow in St. Brendan Cemetery.

A Visitation is Monday from 10 a.m. until time of Mass at Arnold Funeral Home.
