Larry Stanley Mitchell, 78, of Mexico, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2022, at the Missouri Veterans Home.

Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11, at Arnold Funeral Home with Andre Brown officiating. Masonic services will follow. Private burial will be in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Jacksonville.

Visitation is Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Larry was born on July 14, 1944 in Newburg, Missouri, the son of Clyde A. and Ida Lee (Barnett) Mitchell. He graduated from Mexico High School in 1963 and then attended Columbia College. He later married Barbara Muir on August 14, 1970, in Mexico.

Mr. Mitchell served with the U.S. Army 544 th Engineers in Vietnam from 68-70. His service include two tours and he was awarded the Soldier's Medal.

Larry worked for the City of Mexico for 35 years. He was the Street Superintendent the last 25 years until retiring in 2008. Following retirement, he drove a school bus for Mexico Public Schools.

Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Mexico United Methodist Church. He had been the Past-President of the Mexico Optimist Club and the Little Dixie Shrine Club. Larry was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post #3772 He loved old cars, especially his '57 Chevy. Larry had a passion for sports. He was a Mizzou Football season ticket holder for 38 years and also filmed the Mexico Bulldogs games for Mex-TV. Golfing, shooting shotguns and watching birds were some other hobbies. It should also be mentioned his deep love for three fur babies: Daisy, Fred and Ellie.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Mitchell of the home; his children, Joe (Kim) Mitchell of Warrenton, Sherry (Ted) Gastler of Montgomery City, Tom (Christine) Spurling of Columbia and Ed (Linda) Spurling of Mexico; 10 grandchildren, Kelsay, Nicole, Samantha, Rachel, Samantha, Brandon, Bridgett, Brent, Ashley, and Andrew; 29 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Linvell (Beverly) Mitchell of Oak Grove and Bill Mitchell of Australia.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ida Mitchell; one grandson, Ethan Spurling; three brothers, Clyde, Johnny and infant Avery; and his schnauzer, Pepper, who was his pride and joy.

Memorial donations may be made to Shriner's Hospital, VFW Post #3772 or to the donor's choice. All may be sent in care of Arnold Funeral Home, 425 S. Jefferson, Mexico, MO 65265.
