Howard Lee Thurman, 76, of Mexico, died on Monday, August 3, 2026, at the Missouri Veterans Home.

Howard was born on April 26, 1950, in Mexico, the son of Lawrence T. and Helen M. (Jones) Thurman. He was a graduate of Mexico High School.

Following graduation, Howard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, where one of his duties was carrying the radio. While stationed in Okinawa, he joined the Catholic Church. After returning home, he became a devoted member of St. Brendan Catholic Church. For many years, he assisted with the Easter Vigil and faithfully mowed the church grounds, a service he often credited to the encouragement of Mitch, Kenny, Gus, and Albert.

Howard was a dedicated supporter of his fellow veterans and was a regular attendee of the Vietnam veterans group at the Missouri Veterans Home. In fact, he attended the group's meeting on the day he passed away.

He enjoyed fixing things around the house, believed strongly in recycling, and frequently checked on the upkeep of the Jewish Cemetery. Howard was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3760 and the Fourth Degree. Friends and family will always remember one of his favorite sayings: "Works for me."

Howard is survived by his wife of 47 years, Debra Thurman; his daughters, Lacey (Harry) Gabrielson of Austin, Minnesota, and Regina Thurman of St. Peters; and his beloved grandchildren, Magnus, Eleanor, Oliver, and Inga. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Helen Thurman; his sister, Mary Thurman; and his infant son, Lee.

Howard will be laid to rest beside his infant son, Lee, in St. Brendan Cemetery.

A memorial graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, at St. Brendan Cemetery. His special friend, Mike Neubauer, will share words of remembrance.
