Edward Melvin Newman, 84, of Mexico, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at his home.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, at Arnold Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation is Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
Edward was born on July 12, 1937 in Mexico, the son of Ransom and Vivian (Kitts) Newman. He was raised in Benton City and attended Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville. On December 10, 1960, at Love Street Christian Church in Mexico, he married Barbara J. Shaw. She passed away on November 9, 2004.
Mr. Newman was a veteran of the U.S. Army for four years. He then re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served in Vietnam and retired after 25 years. Following the military, Edward worked 11 years for the CIA and then drove for Dick Simon Trucking.
Edward had been a member of the Benton City Christian Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Margaret Nichols of Mexico and Ethel Browning of Springfield; three children, Cindy (Jason) Brooks of Mexico, Troy Newman of Arvada, Colorado, and Chris (Marilyn) Newman of Mexico; three grandchildren, Faith Newman of Nebraska, Michael Newman (Shelby Toalson) of Lee's Summit, and Jordan Newman (Brit Wilson) of Mexico; four great-grandchildren, and his favorite child, Little Bit.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, Edward was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Crim; three brothers-in-law, Donald Nichols, Leon Browning and Harold Crim; one niece, Melissa Gerling; and one nephew, Gary Nichols.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Compassus. They may be sent in care of Arnold Funeral Home, 425 S. Jefferson, Mexico, MO 65265.
The family of Edward would like to thank the staff at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital and Hospice Compassus, most notably Konnie, Mike and Beverly. Your compassion and care was a blessing to all of us.
