Doris Marie Scranton Long was born March 27,1935 in Nebo, IL to George and Ina Mae Scranton. She joined three brothers, Robert Lewis (17), James Albert (14) and George JR (10). The family moved to a farm and Doris learned gardening, canning, cooking, sewing and embroidery from her mother.

In 7th grade, Doris met Vernon Long, a boy who lived over the hill from her. They walked to school together that year then did not see each other much until he returned from the Navy. Doris started work at a nursing home owned by her Aunt Pearl at age 15. After graduation from Nebo High School, she moved to St. Louis and found a job at Wabash RR Illinois terminal. On one of her trips home, she met up with Vernon again and they were married June 4, 1955.

They were blessed with two daughters, Joyce and three years later Glenda. Times were hard and they moved frequently, 14 times in the first 8 years. One move was to Benicia, CA and Vernon went to Barber College. Four years later they moved to Colorado Springs, CO where Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. That decision made a tangible difference in her life and she loved Bible study and sharing her testimony with others.

After two years they moved to Mexico, MO and Doris joined Friendship Baptist Church where she served 30 years teaching Sunday School, working and directing VBS, and was active in missions organizations. She moved her membership to First Baptist in Mexico where she has been a member for 30 years also. Doris went to work in the 1970's at the Audrain County Clerk's office as a deputy clerk helping with voter registrations. She loved meeting people and could start a conversation with anyone. She retired after 18 years.

Doris loved being a homemaker and used all the skills she learned as a girl. She enjoyed sewing and made most of her clothes as well as clothes for her daughters. She was fearless and would tackle any job with gusto. She enjoyed hosting and cooked all the holiday family dinners and often having friends with no family over to share the meal and took dinners to single homebound men and women.

Doris and Vernon loved to travel and traveled to all the lower 48 states, also into Canada and old Mexico. They also took each of their grandchildren on a vacation of their choice. Doris began hobbies through the years. She began piecing quilts and made a quilt for each daughter and each of her 5 grandchildren. She also took up China painting.

Doris was a resident of Kings Daughters Home the last two years and she and Vernon celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary in June 2025. As her health began to decline more rapidly, she became excited about her "big day", the day she would get to see Jesus! That event took place on Friday, February 6, 2026.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and their spouses, several nieces and nephews, and an infant great grandson Josiah Hazlett.

She is survived by her husband Vernon, daughters Joyce (Paul) Marquette and Glenda (Herb) McGlasson. Five grandchildren: Sarah (Bruce) Hazlett, Rachel Marquette, Justin Myers, Joshua Myers and Caleb (Miranda) Marquette, 12 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at Arnold Funeral Home. Rev. Bryce Kristofferson will be officiating the service. Burial will follow at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Visitation will be on Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. till the time of service at the funeral home.
