Delores Jean
Groves
Nov 17, 1937 — Aug 16, 2025
It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Delores Jean Groves, age 87, of Mexico, Missouri. Delores passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025, at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
Delores was born on November 17, 1937, in Mexico, Missouri, to Fred and Della Mae Sumpter. On March 6, 1969, she married Nelson "Nellie" Groves at the First Baptist Church in Mexico. Together, they shared a life filled with love, family, and cherished memories.
She was a devoted mother to her sons, Darrell Acree of Springfield, and the late Bart Acree of Kansas City. Delores was a proud grandmother and leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Brandi Williams (Antonio) of Mexico; Monica Acree (Jamaro) of Columbia; Daniel Acree of Mexico; Shannon Acree (Christine) of Irvine, CA; Jason Acree of Springfield; Roxanne Fargon (Curtis) of Bolivar; along with 14 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Menefee of Jefferson City; sister-in-law, Marjorie Maly of Mexico; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved her dearly.
Delores was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson "Nellie" Groves; her son, Bart Acree; and her parents, Fred and Della Mae Sumpter.
She worked for many years in Food Service for the Mexico Public Schools, and even after retirement, she continued to gather regularly with former coworkers for lunch. She was an active member of the Red Hat Society Eastern Star and the Simmons' Stable Preservation.
Known for her warmth and kindness, Delores had a special love for baking—her turkey turnovers, cookies, and cakes were family favorites that will be lovingly remembered. She also enjoyed camping and attending bluegrass festivals, where she made lasting memories with Nellie and dear friends. Her adventurous spirit, love of music, and joy in life's simple pleasures enriched the lives of all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Arnold Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Mexico. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
