Carl Andrew Smarr, Jr. passed away on October 14, 2024, at the age of 89 while at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Carl was born on October 11, 1935, at Boone Hospital, as the only child of Nelle Mae Wilson and Carl Andrew Smarr Sr. As a young boy, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America, attending Philmont Scout Ranch High Adventure Camp in Cimarron, New Mexico. The Smarr family later moved to Macon, Missouri where Carl graduated from Macon High School in 1953.  He attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri on a football scholarship and was elected president of his Kappa Alpha fraternity pledge class.

Carl enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August 1954 and was the crew chief for the helicopter squadron. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in August 1962. While serving in the Marine Corps, Carl married Betty Sue Davolt in Macon, Missouri on July 8, 1956. The couple moved to Coshocton, Ohio, where they began their family with daughters Kathryn, Julie, and Sara.

Carl was employed at Peabody-Simco Coal for several years in Ohio and later established Smarr Milling Company. He was very active in the Coshocton Jaycees and was awarded their Key Man Award in 1961.  He was also active in the Playmakers, acting in several plays. Carl became a Den Scout Master while in Coshocton, as a nod to his earlier years as a Boy Scout. Carl was named as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America of 1968.

Carl and Betty were very active in the First Baptist Church of Coshocton, serving many roles within the church before moving to Mexico, Missouri, in 1972. After moving to Mexico, Carl reignited his entrepreneurial spirit, founding Smarr Trucking Agency and Champion Driving Range.  He also coached the sophomore girls' Khoury League softball team for many years and sponsored the Trucker's slow-pitch softball team. Carl was a longtime member and supporter of the First Presbyterian Church.

Carl is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Kathryn (David) Adams, Julie Walker, and Sara Smarr (EJ Joers); granddaughters Elizabeth (Lucas) Nettles, Leslie (Steven) Elrod, Sydney Walker, Olivia Walker, and great-grandchildren Grady Nettles, Ava Nettles, and Wyatt Louise Elrod, and a cousin Phillip Wilson from California.

A private family burial service will be held at the Columbarium at the First Presbyterian church in Mexico MO.

Visitation and a light lunch will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church Activities Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an endowment in Carl's name at the First Presbyterian Church in Mexico, MO, or to the Missouri Veterans Home.
