Bernadetta Johnson, 101, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Pin Oaks Living Center.

Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 15, at the First United Pentecostal Church in Mexico. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. until time of service at the church.

She was born on February 9, 1922, in Des Moines, IA, to parents Robert Andrews and Elizabeth Henry Andrews. Bernadetta had four siblings: Ross Andrews, Harold Andrews Flax, Mary Beechum, and Joyce Ann Davis.  She was the sole survivor of her siblings.

On May 4, 1941, Bernadetta joined her hand in marriage to Albert Johnson, and from their union they had six children: Ruth Ecxford (Ralph), Harold Joe Johnson (Michelle), George Johnson, Wanda Johnson Clark, Elmer Johnson (Teresa), and Ida Betty Johnson; and 14 grandchildren, Eva, Lois, Stephanie, Ralph Jr., Eugene, Polly, Cynthia, Joyce, Clarice, Terrell, Trennette, Felicia, Sherman, and Lafayette; 28 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family.

Bernadetta spent many years as a homemaker, housekeeper, and cleaning doctor's offices. She also volunteered at Pin Oaks for 15+ years and was a Foster Grandparent for 20+ years, at the Williams Center. She enjoyed reading her Bible, traveling, doing word searches and puzzles, sewing, and crocheting; and she taught several of her grandchildren to sew and crochet, as well.

She was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church for over 50 years. She loved God, her family, and her community.  She was a prayer warrior.  She loved to petition the Lord for her friends and family in need.  Her family often heard her say that "prayer changes things".  She believed that with all her heart and loved to hear of the stories of victory and answered prayer. She never met a stranger and would help anyone in need.  It was this trait that garnered her the "The Pioneer Award" in 2018. She was truly a remarkable woman that was loved by all and wanted everyone she met to "Know the goodness of the Lord".

In addition to her husband, Albert, Bernadetta was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, three children, Infant Beverly Johnson, Ruth Ecxford, and Harold Joe Johnson: two grandchildren, Ralph Excford Jr, and Sherman R. Galbreath; and one great-grandchild.

Bernadetta is now having a heavenly reunion with loved ones and friends. We know she is with her savior, Jesus Christ.
