Obituary
Joe Hartley Sweitzer, 80 of Mexico, died at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico.

Joe was born Aug. 16, 1929 in Callaway County, Missouri, the son of Glenn Lewis and Bertha Florence (Robnett) Sweitzer. On July 7, 1954 in Mexico, he married Mary Ellen Eckles. She survives of the home.

Mr. Sweitzer served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict, while stationed in Germany. He received the Army Occupation Medal. Joe was a farmer and had worked at A.P. Green two years after his marriage. He was a member of the Mexico United Methodist Church and the IOOF.

The Sweitzer family loved Joe for his love of family and of the land. He took great pride in his crops and livestock. His sense of humor came through in the many stories he enjoyed telling his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Mary Ellen, Joe is survived by two sons, Steve Sweitzer and wife, Polly, of Columbia and Michael Sweitzer and wife, Sharla, of Mexico; one daughter, Jo Ellen Miller of Florida; four grandchildren, Travis Sweitzer, Jessica Miller, Kaitlin Sweitzer and Sadie Sweitzer; one brother, Earl Sweitzer and wife, Sharon, of Perry; one sister, Mildred Mollet of Mexico; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sweitzer was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Clifford, Russell, Stanley and John, and one sister, Clara Sweitzer.

Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home or the Mexico United Methodist Church and can be sent in care of Arnold Funeral Home, 425 S. Jefferson, Mexico, MO 65265.
